Why
Nueva

FPO

Nueva is the place where gifted learners are empowered to fly as far and wide as their talents and passions can carry them.

Experts in Gifted Education

Since its founding in 1967, The Nueva School has been a leader in gifted education, setting the standard for supporting the growth and development of gifted learners. We have pioneered innovative, inquiry-driven models, continually evolving our practices and collaborating with others in the field. Our students thrive in a dynamic, interdisciplinary learning environment where educators and peers alike understand, challenge, and nurture their unique potential.

What is giftedness?

Giftedness is a unique way of thinking, feeling, and experiencing the world—characterized by intense intellectual curiosity, emotional depth, and a strong drive to learn. Gifted students often demonstrate advanced reasoning abilities and a natural eagerness to explore complex ideas. Their talents frequently extend beyond academics, showing up in areas like music, the arts, athletics, or other creative pursuits. While no two gifted learners are the same, research has identified patterns of traits and behaviors that can guide how we recognize and support them. Understanding these characteristics is key to creating learning environments that truly see, challenge, and nurture gifted students, allowing their full potential to emerge.

The Nueva Way

The Nueva Way brings interdisciplinary learning to students, fully integrating their education with their observations of the world. Teacher partnerships and collaboration across subject areas provide rich assignments where students learn in layered, interdependent, and complex ways. Nueva faculty prepare our students to be problem solvers today, facilitating learning opportunities that tackle complex, meaningful issues. They blur the lines between the world and the classroom.

We teach to the stage, not the age, of each student. This intentional approach results in stimulating learning experiences, driven by our students’ curiosity. Nueva students learn by doing. They construct knowledge through hands-on engagement. As experts in project-based learning, teachers guide authentic, purposeful investigations that enable discovery while building the skills students need to be successful.

Student choice is woven into all of their learning. Their interests guide their studies, sparking authentic questions, deep investment, and joy in learning. They have a voice in choosing themes, topics, activities, clubs, and much more, as classroom and community citizens. This approach results in stimulating learning experiences, driven by our students’ curiosity.

Innovation

Innovation is woven into the fabric of life at Nueva. Our educators are constantly reimagining how they teach, creating dynamic, real-world learning experiences that challenge students to think deeply and creatively. New projects and approaches are regularly introduced, encouraging students to explore bold, original solutions to complex problems.

Fueled by the latest research and cutting-edge technology, we adapt to the evolving world around us—always in pursuit of the most impactful learning. Our commitment to continuous improvement also extends to our faculty, who engage in a vibrant culture of professional development. Through collaboration, experimentation, and ongoing learning, they model the very spirit of innovation we nurture in our students.

Social-Emotional Learning

We believe that EQ matters as much as IQ. Nueva’s internationally recognized social-emotional learning program has been fundamental to our commitment to nurture the whole child since the school’s inception in 1967. Our values of care for self, care for others, and care for the community are the foundation of our culture. In a world where many report feeling less connected to each other, society needs people with the skills to understand themselves, their own emotions, and their impact on others.

We formally teach SEL skills at in pre-kindergarten through 11th grade, with curriculum evolving in an age-appropriate way. For gifted students in particular, having a dedicated class for social-emotional learning also gives them a space to understand their unique needs.

Design Thinking

Design thinking—a cornerstone of Nueva’s educational philosophy—is a dynamic, creative problem-solving approach that blends empathy from the humanities, innovation from the arts and engineering, and scientific practices like prototyping and reflection. Through this process, students learn to identify opportunities for meaningful change and develop the skills and confidence to take action. At its core is empathy, guiding students to understand others’ perspectives and design purposeful, human-centered solutions rooted in compassion.

Aligned with Nueva’s strong social-emotional learning foundation, design thinking helps students connect deeply with others and look beyond their own experiences. In partnership with IDEO and Stanford’s d.School, Nueva pioneered the first PreK–12 design thinking program and Innovation Lab (I-Lab). Today, students engage with design thinking daily—both in dedicated I-Labs and as an integral part of their academic journey.

Global Citizenship

At Nueva, students learn to see themselves as global citizens with the power to make meaningful change. They’re encouraged to ask big questions, apply design thinking to real-world challenges, and take thoughtful action.

Experiences throughout the Bay Area, across the country, and around the world—whether through wilderness trips, cultural exchanges, or service learning—immerse students in diverse communities and environments. These journeys deepen their understanding, spark empathy, and cultivate the skills and perspectives needed to lead with purpose, especially in building a more sustainable future.
