Nueva Technology Internship

Every summer, a group of Nueva Upper School students are selected to join the Technology Department as paid interns. Since its start in 2010, the internship program has filled a critically important role in supporting Nueva’s one-to-one laptop program.

Duties & Responsibilities

Tech Interns set up and repair 850 laptops to ensure they are fully functional before they are redistributed to students and staff when the new academic year begins. General responsibilities include:

  • Inventory and set up all laptops.
  • Complete diagnostic tests, make simple repairs, and test effectiveness of repairs.
  • Upgrade machines to the latest operating system and applications.
  • Clean all previously used machines.

Qualifications & Requirements

The internship is open to rising ninth graders and above. Interns are expected to be detail oriented, well organized, patient, and able to follow instructions to the letter.

“It demands perfection because one mistake means another student can no longer use their machine,” says Edward Chen, Nueva’s Technology Director and originator of the program. “The laptops have to be error-free.”

The internship experience is a wonderful opportunity to raise the visibility of the significant effort required to maintain the laptops, while enabling interns to perform as many of the technical tasks as they can. The Tech Internship is a perfect match for students with an interest in computing technology.

What do Nueva Tech Interns learn?

While interns focus primarily on Nueva’s infrastructure, they are also are encouraged to become Apple Certified Mac Technicians by gaining the requisite experience to pass the Apple Service Fundamentals exam.

The Apple certification verifies a person’s ability “to perform basic troubleshooting and repair of both desktop and portable Macintosh systems, such as iMac and MacBook Pro,” according to Apple’s website. The exam also ensures individuals can resolve common operating system problems and effectively repair Apple hardware. Several Nueva students have already achieved this goal!
