senior dinner hero 2

On the evening of Friday, June 9, twelfth graders gathered with family, friends, and Nueva faculty and staff for the Class of 2017 Senior Dinner.

Every detail of the evening was carefully and lovingly created to echo aspects of the journey these students have taken. Small details were important and deliberately chosen — for example, name tags displayed the smiling faces of the students as ninth graders, and the evening’s menu included taco salad and ice cream with brownie sundae, student favorites from their freshman year at the College of San Mateo.

Photos collages showed beautiful images of the class at recent events, and the room was bathed in rainbow colors and light, transforming the gymnasium into an elegant dinner party.

While the program was packed, every element contributed to the celebration of these students. After a warm welcome by Diane Rosenberg, Head of School, guests were immediately pulled into the students’ lives with both a slideshow and a video of student reflections. Speakers throughout the evening included faculty members Mark Hurwitz, Amanda Alonzo, and Dan Cristiani ’86, and student Polina L. Each of their unique themes touched the hearts of the attendees.

Music filled the air throughout the night, again in ways that were truly meaningful to this class. The Soundwaves, Nueva’s choral group, performed contemporary songs arranged by members of the senior class; Emily R. performed a rap with the beatboxing assistance of Christine C. and Henry P.; and student Josh R. performed an original song with a personal message for his classmates.

Stephen Dunn’s closing remarks brought the evening back to the beginning, to recognizing these mavericks, the students who took the leap and began ninth grade at CSM with the promise of more to come, and who wholeheartedly believed in the Nueva Upper School they would create. Stephen thanked them for their constant commitment and hard work, and addressed them as soon-to-be alumni, inviting them to continue to lend their voices to shaping Nueva’s future. With thanks to Diane, the Board of Trustees, parents, and faculty, this wonderful evening came to a close.
