Joeys Playground Dec2016

An outdoor play area near the Lower School was opened in loving memory of Joey Kovacevich last Friday. Joey was a student in the class of 2022 who died of cancer in the summer of 2013. He was a remarkable child — insightful, sweet, joyous courageous, funny, a natural leader, and one of those children that everyone loved, students and adults alike. He also was an artist and creator, innovator, and entrepreneur.

LS musical

Lower School students delighted audiences with their performances of Pasek and Paul’s musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic book, James and the Giant Peach. The musical tells the story of James, a young orphan sent to live with his two conniving aunts. When they send James to cut down a peach tree, he discovers a magic potion that creates a giant peach and human-sized insects. After the peach rolls into the ocean, James and his new insect friends learn to work together and become a family. The Lower School performers treated the audience with singing, dancing, incredible costumes, and a large dose of humor.

JamesLee storyThird-grader James L. has always enjoyed solving math problems, but it is through opportunities provided by Nueva that he has been able to dive deep into the subject.

“As long as he is driving the bus and he wants to do it, Nueva will support whatever he wants to do,” his mother Jennifer said. “It’s not about just creating more challenging work packets in the classroom. The benefit is saying ‘You have an interesting idea and we’re going to support you exploring that and wherever it’s going to take you.’”

Sixth-grader David H. is a natural when it comes to working with young children.

“He loves them and looks after them,” said his advisor Carlo Cerruti.

A few weeks ago, a group of sixth graders were involved in a game at recess. David saw a few fourth graders and asked them to come play, Ceruti said. David also asked for a kindergarten buddy, whom he hangs out with during recess, and took a couple of Lower School students to the I-Lab during Academy one Friday afternoon.
