LS Opera 490pxLower School students performed in the Ballroom with members of the San Francisco Opera Guild in a recent performance of Daughter of the Regiment, a comic opera by Gaetano Donizetti.

“This classic story spotlights a self-confident heroine who thrives due to the support of a strong found-family of soldiers,” according to the Opera Guild’s website.

A total of nine fourth-grade students performed with members of the Guild in a 45-minute, kid-friendly adaptation of the opera and had brief speaking and acting roles. The opera is part of the Guild’s Opera à la Carte program — professional singers visit K–12 schools in the Bay Area and perform alongside students in grades four through eight.

“It’s an outreach program to expose children to opera,” Guild member Michael Taylor said. “We’re educating by informing and entertaining. We also do this to get kids involved and interested in performing arts. Everybody from ages 5 to 80 appreciates it.”

The program has been brought to Nueva before, and Lower School Music Teacher Maggie Eggert said she wanted to continue the tradition. The fourth-grade students who participated met during lunch recess one day a week to rehearse. At home, they were required to highlight their parts, memorize their lines, and learn the stage directions.

“The students really wanted to be in it; they were really excited about it,” Eggert said. “It’s a great opportunity to introduce people to opera and great opportunity for people who like to perform.”
