Sportsmanship at Nueva
The Nueva School believes good sportsmanship is an integral component of interscholastic competition.
Ahead of each home competition, Nueva Athletics passes out the sportsmanship statement below. It's important for us to ensure that everyone involved in a competition—athletes, coaches, and spectators—follow the values of good sportsmanship.
We embrace the position that, in order for sportsmanship to prevail, coaches, student-athletes, and fans must display respect, fairness, civility, honesty, and responsibility before, during, and after all athletic contests. We encourage fans to enthusiastically support their team, recognize the outstanding performance of opponents, and always exhibit good sportsmanship in their words and actions.
The Nueva School encourages and promotes sportsmanship by all student-athletes, coaches, and spectators. We are committed to holding activities and events in a safe environment free from harassment. Offensive language—including profanity and derogatory remarks around a person’s race, ethnicity, culture, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, national origin, veteran status, social-economic class, religion, or professional status—or other intimidating actions directed at officials, staff, participants, coaches, team representatives, or spectators will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the competition site.

“Our [basketball] head coach, Barry Treseler, instilled in us a sense of unselfishness. He always told us to recognize when someone else helped us out, whether it's a teammate helping you up or even something like a team parent recording stats or game film. Barry taught us that we can always ‘acknowledge the assists’ on and off the court, and this is something that we will all take with us."
