2022 Mathematics Institute
with Dr. James Tanton and Jennifer Chang Wathall
June 30–July 1, 2022
Program Overview
Transforming the Mathematics Teaching Mindset
Dr. Jennifer Chang Wathall and Dr. James Tanton facilitate this two-day, virtual mathematics institute on the teaching mindset for all teaching faculty across PreK–12. The institute will model a blended learning experience, and will include 2 two-hour synchronous sessions and 2 one-hour asynchronous sessions each day.
This two-day interactive and practical workshop looks at bringing joyful learning into the mathematics classroom and helping students understand the fundamental purposes of what they are learning in the 21st-century context. Using a constructivist approach, Jennifer and James will engage educators in group work and discussions. Educators will be given an opportunity to create artifacts to transfer and apply their learning to their own context.
We live in a content-rich society with answers to all our questions at our fingertips. And our students know that and live that! So what then is the goal of a traditional curriculum in a 21st-century environment? Participants will learn how to teach students to assess what they know, what they think they know, and how they think they know it.
This institute will address the following guiding questions:
- What is the deep conceptual storyline of mathematics for students in grade PreK–12
- How do we foster student agency, intellectual agility, and personal confidence?
- How do we create joyful mathematics learning experiences?
Conceptual themes for exploration and action:
- Growth mindset
- The power of visualization
- Designing joyful learning experiences for the math classroom: What is conceptual understanding
- Inquiry-based learning and student agency
- Unveiling evidence of learning
Artifacts produced during the workshop will include:
- Scaffolded mathematical experiences designed by educators and appropriate for their specific grade-level of teaching
- Designed enrichment opportunities for students ready to soar
- Enhanced experiences for students looking to deepen and practice their understanding.
