Nueva’s Swimming and Diving team is racing to a record-breaking season. With a small and mighty crew of nine swimmers, the team placed sixth at the West Bay Athletic League (WBAL) Championship meet on Saturday, April 27 against teams with over 50 swimmers.
This year marked the first time that the Nueva girls team competed in a relay race. Special congratulations to tenth-grader Connie H., ninth-graders Willow T., Anika S., and Maya A. who successfully completed the 200m medley and 200m freestyle relays, setting new school records for both.
Nueva had strong representation in the WBAL finals, with tenth-grader Connie H. in the 100m breaststroke, tenth-grader Afton L. in the 50/100m freestyle, eleventh-grader Clay A. in the 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, eleventh-grader Ryan G. in the 100m breaststroke, and twelfth-grader Christopher R. in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley.
Now in its third season, the Swimming & Diving team formed during the 2016-17 school year when Nueva alum Alex C. and Christopher R. recruited a small core of six swimmers and one diver. The team’s first t-shirts were spray-painted using stencils laser-cut at the I-Lab. Their kickoff meet at Small School Invite was memorable, with swimmers shivering as they lined up at the blocks. The Swimming & Diving team has been growing steadily since, both in numbers and skill.
"Our student swimmers have driven this program from the beginning, and we're thrilled with our results this year," said Nueva Swimming & Diving Coach Patrick Gannon. "The Nueva relays turned in their strongest performances ever and most swimmers achieved personal bests during the season. Half of the team scoring in finals at WBAL is a real accomplishment. We're a small but powerful team, and we're laying the foundation for next year with most swimmers returning. Our goal is to continue building the swimming tradition at Nueva."
The Nueva boys relay teams were led by Christopher R., Ryan G., Clay A., Afton L., and ninth-grader Luca N., and they set new school records in both the 200m medley and 200m freestyle relays.
Christopher R. won the WBAL 100m backstroke race, and represented Nueva in the finals at the CCS Swimming & Diving Championships this past weekend. He has now qualified for the CIF State Swimming & Diving Championships in Clovis on May 10-11 thanks to his impressive performance in the 100m backstroke.
"In reflecting about this year's swim team, our students took some big strides in creating team identity," said Chris Wade, PreK-12 Athletic Director. "Students committed and came together to represent themselves and our school in an impressive way."
Captained this year by Ryan G., Clay A., and eleventh-grader Zoe H., Nueva's Swimming & Diving program is growing each year, and looks forward to continued success over the next few seasons. Go Mavericks!
