During the week of June 15, our parents and students met with teachers on Zoom for their end-of-the-year conferences. More 350 Nueva students, across all divisions, participated in nearly 45 online-classes hosted by our enrichment partners and visiting educators. The week was the first of three special Maverick Weeks to be held this summer.
In March, as Nueva transitioned to remote learning, Diane Rosenberg asked me to create a series of free programs that could extend our ability to support Nueva families beyond the school year–first with our Spring Break programming and now with this summer’s Maverick Weeks. We know that many of our families and students are hungry for engaging and enriching activities when school is not in session.
As a parent, I know that these days have been challenging–each day is long and full of uncertainty. As wonderful as the extra time has been with my daughter, there are only so many Hamilton sing-alongs, Lego creations, and dress-up parties we can have before I am in need of some fresh ideas and extra support.
At Nueva, we have an incredible team of enrichment providers, school-year teachers, and passionate educators who are ready and willing to come together to learn alongside our students. We have tried to space the classes out at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, so that our students still have time to go outside, limit their screen time, and enjoy the summer.
The feedback and level of heartfelt gratitude I have received from our families has been incredible. My team and the entire administration are happy to be able to do it–keeping our community connected, welcoming our new families, and remaining committed to learning is essential for our community at this time.
Our next Maverick Weeks classes will be held on August 3–7 and August 10–14. We will have details and registration links ready for the community by the middle of July. Currently, our team is working hard to launch Nueva Summer—another opportunity we have to share our values and love of learning with the community and folks from throughout the country.
