Former Santana band mate joins Nueva School students for a steel drum concert

On Saturday, December 1, Nueva’s steel drummers hit the stage with special musical guests Robert Greenidge and Tony Lindsay for the annual "Caribbean Night at Nueva" concert. Tony Lindsay was the voice of Santana for 25 years, and he is an eleven-time Grammy winner. Greenidge has been performing steel drums with Jimmy Buffet for the past 30 years, and also appears on recordings Bill Withers, John Lennon, and many more. Music teacher and steel bands director Jim Munzenrider describes Greenidge as “perhaps the greatest steel drum player on the planet.”

The concert featured 80 steel drummers, ranging in grades from 1-12, playing to a packed audience. Students covered hits like Santana’s “Smooth,” and Stevie Wonder’s “Bird of Beauty,” as well as other popular tunes and originals by Greenidge. Donations at the front door raised nearly $2,000 for the music program. Check out the video and slideshow for concert highlights.
