Building off the momentum of highly successful fall and winter seasons, Nueva’s Upper School athletics program launches spring sports this week. Teams taking to the field include: Boys’ Tennis, Co-ed Track & Field, Girls’ Softball, and Boys’ Golf. Tennis will field both a Junior Varsity and Varsity squad for the first time this season, with close to 30 students participating. We are also excited to announce the new addition of co-ed Swimming & Diving to this spring’s line-up.
By gaining full membership into the Central Coast Section this fall, Nueva can now offer student-athletes in these spring sports the opportunity to compete for league and section championships. This year has already seen Nueva capture the school’s first Upper School PSAL league championship, CCS team championship, as well as a third place finish in the California state cross-country meet. We hope to qualify for post-season competition this winter, as well.
Amrit Chima, Upper School Athletics Director, shared her enthusiasm, “We’re so excited about the future of Nueva athletics. What we have accomplished in our first four years is tremendous. From capturing championships, to increasing overall student participation, and adding teams, our program is growing and thriving.”
In addition to nurturing the success of our current teams, Nueva is building the foundation for boys’ and girls’ lacrosse programs with cross-divisional offerings this spring. Upper School students will have a PE offering held on Fridays at the Hillsborough campus while Middle School students will be offered an Academy on Fridays beginning in March. Cross-divisional training, playing, and mentoring opportunities are planned for the end of this spring season. We are excited to take these first initial steps towards building a competitive interscholastic program.
While still early in the college acceptance process, a number of Nueva Upper School seniors will continue as collegiate student-athletes next fall. We will share more about this exciting news in the coming months.
