From Michoacán to Nueva: A Life Built Through Food

I came to the United States from Michoacán, Mexico, back in 1985 when I was just 16 years  old. Honestly, I didn’t have big dreams at that time—I simply wanted to come to the United States and see what life had to offer.

 Snapshots: Halloween at Nueva

At Nueva, Halloween is a beloved celebration that brings out the creativity of students across all divisions. Last week, the festive spirit filled both campuses as students celebrated the spooky season with imagination and long-standing traditions.

From Pressure to Perspective

I took the PSAT earlier this month. Going into it, I was very confident—especially for math—but that confidence soon faltered as I found myself pressured on time in both sections. I learned many things from the test itself; however, my main takeaway is not about what I learned from taking a test that I know has little meaning to me.

The Gift of Belonging

The mother of a new student recently told me that at her daughter’s first performance here this fall, she looked around and realized that everyone else was just as animated, just as invested as she was. She sang and danced with her whole heart—and so did everyone around her. She belonged. On that stage, in that performance, at Nueva.

Doing the Scary Thing

When I first joined the Nueva community three years ago, Coffeehouse was one of the first events I attended. I was there taking photos, and I vividly remember sitting in quiet awe of the brave and talented students and teachers who stepped into the spotlight to share a part of themselves with the community. I didn’t know any of them yet, but I admired them deeply—their courage, their openness, their trust in this community.

Fast forward to this fall, and in a twist no one—especially me—could have seen coming, I became one of those brave people.

Lee Fertig

Head of School

"Nueva is more than just a school for gifted learners. It’s more than just a place where students focus on design thinking and social emotional learning. It’s a beloved community, inclusive and compassionate, collectively embracing diverse perspectives and empowering everyone to make choices that benefit the world."
