What is SEL?

Social and Emotional Learning is a process for helping children develop the fundamental skills for life effectiveness -- including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Now in its second year, The SEL Teacher Training Institute will provide participants with the inspiration, rationale, and ideas to bring SEL into their communities. Each session blends theory with practice and will empower attendees to educate with student well-being and cooperation as core principles.

The SEL Institute is for educators and professionals who:

  • wish to experience a sense of renewal by exploring educational practices that promote creativity, optimism, and resiliency.
  • are a beginning or veteran teacher, counselor, or administrator seeking research, rationale and opportunities to promote SEL in their schools, camps and programs.
  • enjoy hands on experiences, discussion, as well as time for self-reflection.
  • wish to add or develop the fundamentals of SEL in their K-8th grade classroom.

You will walk away with:

  • a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of SEL teaching and program.
  • a toolbox of lesson ideas and activities to use in your classroom.
  • current research supporting SEL’s role in creating healthy school communities.
  • a new network of educators and professionals committed to affective instruction.
