Integrated Subject: Foreign Language
Spanish Teacher Bibi Millet charged her students with creating a presentation on a Spanish-speaking country “in a way that has never been done before.” The emphasis in this project, from a Design Thinking perspective, was on the Research/Deep Dive and the Generate Ideas stages. Students did on-line research both in the I-Lab and as homework. Armed with this information, they worked to brainstorm novel ways in which they could present their research and the fun facts that they had learned (Research).

Integrated Subject: Social and Emotional Learning
The first graders were led through many of the stages of the Design Thinking process as they created an experience for their families to share. After having the first graders concentrate upon the experience of receiving a gift, they were asked to interview their parents about things that their families like to do together (Research/Deep Dive).

For nine weeks this fall, a team of five students worked through the many steps of the Design Thinking Process. "Let's build a rocket!" "No, I think we should build a nuclear power plant." "Let's make things that explode!" The five students of the first I-Lab Academy were full of big ideas as they entered the Innovation Lab.

Integrated Subject: Humanities

Our new 5th grade Humanities teacher, Jenna Greenfield, created an exciting way to engage students in the topic of Rights and Responsibilities this fall. Jenna had an idea. “I’m thinking we could do something around the theme of Utopias ...” That was the beginning of a project that engaged the students’ imaginations and intellects. This project had two parts.
