The American Math Contest 10 is a 25 question, 75 minute multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts.  For the 2010-2011 school year there will be two dates on which the contest may be taken: AMC 10A on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 , and AMC 10B on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 .

The main purpose of the AMC 10 is to spur interest in mathematics and to develop talent through the excitement of solving challenging problems in a timed multiple-choice format. The problems range from the very easy to the extremely difficult. Students who participate in the AMC 10 should find that most of the problems are challenging but within their grasp. The contest is intended for everyone from the average student at a typical school who enjoys mathematics to the very best student at the most special school.

During this series of four classes, Joshua Zucker will help students move through multiple problems and math concepts to better prepare students for this challenging and exciting math contest!

To learn more about the AMC 10, please visit their website, which will answer quesitons about the type of questions, and format of the test.

Dates: 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 12/10
Suggested Grades: 3-5
Time: 1:30-3:30
Price:
$45 - Single Class; $155 - Four Class Series

Week 1 – 10/8: Squares
Square shapes, square numbers, square sums, and maybe even some magic squares!

In class one of our Saturday Math series, we will learn how to write squares as sums and write other numbers as sums of squares.  We'll apply that knowledge to solve some classical problems as well as some more entertaining ones like arranging a numerical square dance. Don't worry, the numbers will be doing the dancing, not the students.

Week 2 – 10/22: Counting
It may seem like something you learn before you even start kindergarten, but in fact counting can be quite difficult.  For example, how many squares can be formed in a 100x100 grid of dots?  How can we count them all?  How can we even begin to understand how many different sizes there are when you include all the "tilted" ones?

In class two, students will learn techniques for organizing a counting problem into easier subproblems, and by exploiting patterns, arrive at some very deep results.  We'll also see how counting squares and rectangles can relate to some little-known properties of the multiplication table.

Week 3 – 10/29: Sequences
Some sequences like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, are fairly easy to understand. Or are they?  There are many, many patterns that start out simply, only to later reveal complexity.  How can we analyze these sequences and use new counting techniques to understand the patterns that produce them?  In class three, students will learn some universal techniques that unlock the secrets of some of these sequence patterns.  Mathematicians may know them by scary-sounding names like "inverse binomial transforms" but we'll see that these techniques can be expressed with not much more than a little subtraction.

Week 4 – 12/10: Primes
Prime numbers are the building blocks that we use with multiplication to generate all the rest of the numbers.  How can we begin to count them?  How do they relate to counting? What are the connections to squares?  In our final class of the series, students will tie together many of the key ideas from previous classes in order to begin an investigation into the number-theoretic applications of counting.  We'll see how we can draw squares and count dots to establish sequences and uncover patterns in the primes that connect them to the Pythagorean theorem.

Dates: 10/15, 10/29, 11/5
Suggested Grades:
4-6
Time:
10:00-12:30
Price:
$65 – Single Class; $165 – Three Class Series

Week 1 – 10/15: Mysteries of the Super Cold
Dive into the mystery of cryogenics! In this workshop, you will use two enigmatic super cold substances to explore the realm of extremely low temperatures. Liquid nitrogen and dry ice will create some fascinating lab effects. How do solids, liquids and gases behave when they get very cold? What happens when very cold substances warm up again? Watch things shrink, shatter and explode as they experience drastic temperature changes. Learn about the liquefying air, cryogenic hardening, gas laws and other fascinating effects. Finish by making your own instant liquid nitrogen ice cream!

Week 2 – 10/29: Electromagnetic Devices

Unlock the secrets of electromagnetism, one of the four basic forces in the universe. Explore the relationship between electric currents and magnetic fields as you investigate and build electromagnetic devices. Generators, audio speakers, maglev trains, electric motors and many other devices use electromagnetism to function. In this workshop, you will use magnetic fields to generate electricity (in small, safe amounts), explore how electric current creates magnetic fields and take apart electromagnetic devices. Finally, you will build your own small electric motor to take home with you.

Week 3 – 11/5: Chemical Adventures
Create some exciting effects as we explore the ways that atoms rearrange themselves when chemicals react. Explore color change, combustion and gas production. Studying these captivating phenomena in molecular detail is a compelling way to learn some important chemistry skills. Lean to write and balance simple chemical equations, model molecular changes, calculate and use molar masses, as you practice your lab techniques for measuring, weighing and mixing chemicals. Fire, fizz and swirling colors (though on a small scale) will entertain and enlighten chemistry buffs in this Saturday Science workshop.

Dates: 10/15-12/10: 8 Classes (No class on 11/26)
Suggested Grades:
Students: 3-6; Parents: Any age!
Time: 10:30-12:00
