Nueva was founded nearly 50 years ago with a core value of self-science, which in the ensuing years was developed into and became widely known as Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). These values of self-awareness, self-advocacy, empathy, care, communication, and collaboration are at the foundation of Nueva's distinctive, award winning, and educational environment and continue to underlie our culture, community, and daily practice of lifelong learning with a foundation of social and emotional health.
With the increasing appreciation for the value of SEL in all learning environments, a group of Nueva educators founded The SEL Institute at Nueva, which became the Institute for Social and Emotional Learning, to share our SEL best practices. The goal is to offer high-quality professional development, and tools and skills to introduce and improve SEL initiatives in schools. IFSEL offers four-day intensives and one-day workshops each year.
