10 UnConference SJC 0184Students took full control of the instructional reins, leading and attending workshops aimed at sharing their unique and varied passions during the second annual UnConference on November 17 at the Upper School.

Assistant Head of Upper School Mike Peller said, "We have intentionally allowed the UnConference process to be an organic one — honoring and celebrating the multiple skills, interests, and passions in this school.”

Students led 45 unique workshops that covered a variety of topics and themes. Students demonstrated how to change a car tire, use Adobe Illustrator, forge dragons out of clay, make beats in Ableton Live, pitch a tent, and speak Arabic.

Reflecting on the event, student council co-president Paco P. said "UnConference offered something for everyone in a remarkably organic way. I split my time evenly between a lecture on reinforcement machine learning and a screening of La La Land paired with a Bananagrams tournament. All I could think to myself was 'Where else but here at Nueva?'"

Twelfth grader Sinead C. captured images at the event.
