House Sorting EditedBy Scott B., Upper School Contributor

Walking into the crowded auditorium, freshmen saw large groups of students in four rows sorted by house. “Ceres! Ceres! We’re the house that carries!” could be heard from one side of the gym while “A-QUI-LA!” echoed from the other. For the first time in Nueva’s history, incoming freshmen were welcomed with a House Sorting Ceremony.

The House System was newly implemented at Nueva during the 2016–2017 school year to create more school spirit and bring students from different grades together. The drive to create a house system was led by seniors Ari N. and Jessa M. who felt that there was a need for stronger bonds between students of different grades. This year will be the first full year with the system in place, and it will likely see a lot of growth.

“I can’t wait to see where the students  take it,” said Ari N.  “I’m excited to see it get bigger and better this year.”

The system is fully student-run and will now have student leadership positions to help improve the system over the course of the year. With luck, the House System will provide Nueva students with one more way to help shape their community.
