UX Choir 490pxUpper School choral students performed in their A Sweet Night of Singing fall concert last week and are now busy preparing for spring festivals.

“I think it went really well,” Upper School Choir teacher Allison Renn said. “There were some really lovely moments and the repertoire came together in a beautiful, profound way. It was a nice fall show.”

Selections included Be Our Guest, Mr. Sandman, A Thousand Years, and Defying Gravity. The Sound Waves class, Sound Waves Club, and Nueva Notables group all performed.

In the spring, the ensembles will be performing in two big concerts. The Night of Song event on April 21 will include solos, original numbers and choral selections, and on May 6 Nueva will host an A Capella Festival. Esteemed arranger Deke Sharron, who wrote the music for Pitch Perfect, will lead clinics.

“The goal is getting our Sound Waves Club to perform three originals that are written or arranged by Nueva students,” Renn said. “We’re working on making sure that’s a successful experience for the student and practicing the music to make sure we get the most out of the opportunity.”

The festival will also be open to local high school and college A Capella groups.

“They will be able to participate in master clinics on topics like arranging, beat boxing, how to work on the balance and blend of an ensemble, and how to get the best sound,” Renn said.

She added Sharron has a catalog of topics groups can choose to focus on while working with him. The day will culminate with an A Capella choral concert with all of the groups who participated.

“Our goal is to make that day really successful and to show the rest of the students here what the choral program is and what our goals are so we can continue to expand and grow,” Renn said.
