26 Nueva Cup IMG 8732The Tenth Anniversary Nueva Cup Annual Golf Tournament teed off Friday, September 29, at Green Hills Country Club in Millbrae with one of the largest group of golfers in its history. More than 60 Nueva parents, alumni parents, students, faculty, and extended family and friends enjoyed a wonderful afternoon on the links followed by a reception, awards ceremony, and raffle.

“The primary intent of the Nueva Cup is to bring Nueva community members together for a day of camaraderie, fun, and friendly competition for the benefit of Nueva Athletics,” said Norm Thomsen, parent of a Nueva twelfth grader and Nueva Cup chairperson.

The golf tournament follows a fun, low-pressure, four-person team scramble format where everyone hits a drive and then plays from the best position repeatedly until the ball is holed. The winning team — Gerald Risk, Hoon Cho, Samir Kaul, and Michael de Anda — posted a low score of 58, 13 under the course’s par. Shooting 60 and taking second place was a foursome with two fifth graders and their fathers: Herald and Henry C., and Anthony and James L.

The Nueva Cup has become an anticipated annual event, and many participants bring family and friends, some from long distances, to play the beautiful Green Hills course. For example, the Henricksons said this was one of their family’s favorite events for the year, with one team member coming from the Netherlands. Phil Pemberton, a Nueva parent, emphasized that enjoying the day together is important, “We like the camaraderie of golf, making fun of each other, and having a good time.” Paul Hegarty, a Nueva alum parent, brings friends every year. “We’re out here to play for the kids,” he said.

The field of golfers also included members of the upper and middle school golf teams. Nueva senior Chip T. won the “closest to the pin” contest with a shot that was 7’ 0” from the hole. Fifth grader James L. won the longest drive competition from the red tees. “There’s strategy involved in golf, and I like the team component of the scramble,” said James L., in his second year on Nueva’s golf team. “I like golf because I get to play with my dad,” said fifth grader Henry C.

This year there was specific emphasis by the organizers on solicitation of tee sponsorships, and Norm was pleased by the results of this initiative as there were more tee sponsors than ever. The evening reception included a raffle which also raised money for Athletics. Interesting and popular prizes were provided by many generous donors. Norm expressed his thanks to all the contributors.

“To spend an afternoon with friends and compatriots is just a blast,” said Nueva Cup winner Michael de Anda, whose child is in seventh grade. “It’s an amazing event, whether you play golf or not, to spend a beautiful afternoon on the golf course.”
