CN EngineeringAwardA team including Nueva sixth graders Akshay S., David F., and Luca L., recently won the Outstanding Engineering Journal Award for the Sixth Grade Division at the Tech Challenge 2017 competition on Saturday, April 29.

The Tech Challenge is the signature program of the Tech Museum of Innovation.  Every year it invites teams of students in grades 4–12 to use the engineering design process to solve a real-world problem.  This year is the 30th year of this program, and more than 2,500 students participated in the challenge.  The topic this year was Rock the Ravine, where students had to design and build a device to help explorers cross an ice field with two ravines over three platforms.  The teams started the brainstorming, designing, and building process in October, 2016.  Our team had met weekly, and in the final weeks, almost daily, to work on the challenge.  The solution they came up with was a mini-robot with a movable bridge that included three linear actuators, two motors, three remote controlled receivers, carbon fiber rods, and hours of sweat and innovation.  They were one of the few teams that even reached the third platform.  The engineering journal is a record of this process and the award was for excellence, both in the design process and for conveying that process to others.
