CN recitalNight heroAfter months of exploration, investigation, and a healthy dose of imagination, eighth graders had the opportunity to showcase their individual passion projects at Nueva’s 27th Annual Recital Night on the Hillsborough campus.

The evening began with a welcome from Middle School Division Head Liza Raynal, who said, “I say this every year, but this is my favorite event of the year and hopefully for the students, the beginning of long-lit fires. This evening plants me firmly at the gates of hope for the future.”

Sixty-seven student displays were showcased across the café lawn, library, and J-building. The wide array of student displays included everything from original music instruments to blacksmithing to screen printing to climate change research to Rubik’s cube-solving robots. Some students even pursued projects that kick-started potential careers from “professional YouTuber” to venture capital investor. The gym was jam-packed for live demonstrations, which included a rock band, lyra, mandolin, and violin performances, a diabolo trick show, and a presentation on building a perplexus.

In addition to Nueva parents, attendees included newly admitted middle school families, who got an opportunity to engage with current students and better understand how student-driven learning experiences are central to Nueva’s learning culture. In the same spirit, two nights later, Nueva families — new and old —had the opportunity to see upper school students share personal passion projects at Quest Night.
