CN eigthGradeSleepoverFor many years, Nueva eighth graders went on an off-campus retreat each March. With the opening of the Upper School this trip was discontinued. But eighth graders craved time with their classmates and created something new in its place: a sleepover in the mansion!

In typical Nueva fashion, students handled it all, with this year’s two eighth grade student council representatives, Tara S. and Sydney R, planning far in advance to find a date that would accommodate as many students as possible. Not only did they find a convenient Friday night, they coordinated with first grade teachers to gain permission to use their classrooms for sleeping, created a budget, organized a movie and games, decided on food for dinner and breakfast, and set up cleaning teams for Saturday morning.

Dinner was the usual sleepover fare—pizza, salad, amazing S’mores, and in the words of one attendee, “a zillion yummy snacks.”

Students played a delightfully nostalgic game of storytelling, sharing their favorite Nueva memories of trips, teachers, places, and experiences. “It was truly heartwarming,” said Cynthia Kosut, Nueva Middle School Humanities Teacher and Eighth Grade Dean. “They were having such a good time telling stories, they didn’t want to go to sleep.”

Most students in the class attended and were also joined by several Chinese exchange students that were visiting as part of Nueva’s Lan. Students had the option of being picked up at 10 pm or spending the night and more than half chose to stay.

For many, this event echoes back to their first Nueva “trip” experience – the first grade sleepover. It was a great time for the students to spend time together as a whole outside of an academic setting.

“I think this overnight brought us closer since we experienced our classmates in a different light,’ said Tara. “Even students new to Nueva got to experience what it’s been like to be a student here. It was really great to laugh so much about all the fun things we’ve done.”
