CN FamilyMathNight.PKOn Thursday, February 16, Nueva families gathered in the lower school Ballroom for the First Grade Family Math Night. First graders from both Emily Mitchell’s and Diana Friedman’s classes were given the opportunity to teach their family members how to play a variety of games they have been exploring at school.

Math Specialist Stephanie Englehaupt provided a number of board and card games that the children have been mastering, including Carcassonne, Quirkle, Lost Cities, Mancala, and Clumsy Thief. Other games included the classic Dots and Boxes game that can be played simply with paper and pencils, and Santorini, which uses unit blocks and counting bears.

The Ballroom was abuzz with children giving instructions and coaching their families along the way. Additionally, the two first-grade classrooms hosted explorations of their own original board game designs! Diana’s classroom games are designed around the lives of hummingbirds, a nod to their class name. Emily’s students, “The Erupting Volcanoes,” are designing games that incorporate volcanoes and their exploration of buildings. Children shared their game designs with their families while gathering data for future modifications.
