Joeys Playground Dec2016

An outdoor play area near the Lower School was opened in loving memory of Joey Kovacevich last Friday. Joey was a student in the class of 2022 who died of cancer in the summer of 2013. He was a remarkable child — insightful, sweet, joyous courageous, funny, a natural leader, and one of those children that everyone loved, students and adults alike. He also was an artist and creator, innovator, and entrepreneur.

The beautiful dedication was well attended by Nueva students, parents, faculty, and Joey’s family members. During the ceremony, Head of School Diane Rosenberg, Head of Lower School Emily Johnson, Lower School Social-Emotional Learning Teacher Lisa Hinshelwood, and Joey’s father Todd Kovacevich all spoke.

Speakers gave brief memories of Joey, told the purpose of the area and why it was built, presented Nueva’s hopes and dreams for the play space, and thanked people who were involved in making the project happen.

At the end of the ceremony Joey’s parents, Todd and Bradley, together cut a ribbon to officially open the new play area.
