Thumbnail imageNueva alumnus and extraordinary pianist David Ko, class of 2006, played the piano and also accompanied some of Nueva’s student musicians during a special school performance in January. Both current and past Nueva students found his performance very inspiring. David, a pianist and composer, attends both Columbia University and The Julliard School. He has won numerous competitions and awards as a performer, including the Russian Music Competition, the Pacific Musical Society Competition, and the Marilyn Mindell Piano Competition. He was also a prizewinner at Lindau’s Rotary Jugend-Musikpris in Germany.

Check out these videos to see him playing at Nueva and to hear what he valued most about his time at our school.

Thumbnail imageGood product designs meet two criteria -- they serve a need that makes life better and are easy to use. Alumna Arna Ionescu, class of '92, relayed this and more to middle school students when she spoke at an assembly in January. With a career in design, currently working at Proteus Biomedical, her current project is to help determine how people could best use a cutting-edge technology that enables a pill -- once swallowed -- to communicate with one's cell phone. During her talk, Arna also told students she would not have embarked on a design career without her Nueva education, as it provided her with some vital experiences such as collaborating with classmates.

Hello! My name is Nishad, and I graduated from Nueva in 2009. I discovered my passion for long-distance running at Nueva. I loved running, but due to my asthma, I found it hard to run fast. Therefore, I pursued the Nueva approach to the problem and turned this obstacle into an opportunity, deciding to run long instead of fast. In fact, in a span of 3 years, I went from a half marathon distance to a recent 100 mile race.

Giving back is important to me, so I ran the 100 miler to raise funds for my current high school, Crystal Springs. I want to give back to Nueva, the school which gave me the inspiration to pursue my aspirations, and what better way than to share my passion with all of you? Join me, fellow Nueva students, athletes, families, faculty, friends and alumni on September 30 as we run for fun and good health during the Nueva Fun Run. I hope to see you there! Sign up today! Changing the lives of children for the better is at the heart of what Annie Hazlehurst, '95, co-founder and board chairperson of KnowledgeBeat, has done. After graduating from Brown University Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biotechnology, Annie worked in a remote village in Zambia, doing conservation research with the Zambian Wildlife Authority, then moved to Southeast Asia where she taught English. Annie returned to California and worked as an Investment Banking Analyst in Morgan Stanley's Financial Sponsors Group before attending graduate school at Stanford University, where she obtained her M.S. in Environment and Resources. She joined venture capital firm, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, investors in early stage start-up companies, and today is focused primarily on early-stage clean technology investments and emerging market opportunities. While working and pursuing her graduate degree, Annie and three friends from Menlo School formed KnowledgeBeat, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate children in rural Zambia through community-driven programs that serve local needs, such as girls' advancement, health, and the environment. Annie also earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
