10 BruinMUN IMG 4268A delegation of 8 eighth-grade Model United Nations students traveled to UCLA to take part in a high school MUN event attended by over 1,700 students from across the country on November 11–12.

Nueva’s MUN co-advisor Lora Saarnio said, “I am so proud that our students had such a great experience and rose to the challenge of participating in a high school conference. We even managed a bit of recognition!” Pascal D. and Ezra B.M. received honorable mentions.

Veteran MUN delegate Andrew C. explained what set the conference apart from others our students have attended. “BruinMUN is a really fun high school debate conference hosted by UCLA college students that offers a wide variety of committees and relevant topics. The chairs are very good (as they know what it is like to be a high school debater), but they are also really nice people overall. Besides high-quality debate, this conference also had opportunities for delegates to discuss college life at UCLA and to provide feedback to improve the debate.”

Nueva delegate Maya A. acknowledged the increased challenge that came along with competing at the high school level. “At times, it was a little bit stressful, as we made many mistakes. High school MUN is much more difficult than middle school MUN. I think that we used our mistakes to improve a lot and learn helpful strategies for the future.”11 BruinMUN IMG 4269

Model United Nations competitions allow students to challenge themselves to take new and divergent viewpoints that are often far from their personal political and social opinions.  A central tenet of the program is that you embody the leaders and policymakers of foreign countries in an effort to compromise and draft resolutions.

Eighth grader Akshar R. illustrated this point. “I think that it was very fun because it gave me exposure to many different views about a controversial topic — international involvement in Syria. I learned a lot!”

In his third year of competition at Nueva, Pascal, now a veteran delegate, said, “I was the DPRK (North Korea) in a committee discussing journalists’ rights. I felt like the overall quality of debate at the conference was very high, and that we were able to discuss extremely complex possible solutions.

“Additionally, the opportunity to be radical and still on-policy was incredible, especially as we were able to spend a lot of our speech time tearing into US foreign policy, a very fun position for me and my partner, Ezra."

“BruinMUN was one of the best MUN conferences I have ever been to. We had a really great committee and a really great chair. Our committee’s debate was super interesting and fun,” said delegate Ellie G.

“I just wished the conference had been longer!” added Ezra.
