10 XCChampsBESTgirl IMG 8426Over the Thanksgiving weekend, the Mavericks topped off a very successful season at the CIF State Cross-Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno, with a fifth-place finish for the girls’ varsity and a ninth-place finish for the boys’ varsity. Nueva was the only school in the CCS to place both girls’ and boys’ teams in the top ten at the state championship, and one of only three schools in all of Northern California to do so.

"This is our program’s best-ever combined finish,” said preK–12 Athletics and PE Director Amrit Chima. “Placing two teams in the top ten at the state championship is really impressive. We are tremendously proud of our student-athletes and coaches.”

The success at the state championships comes on the heels of the girls' winning their second consecutive CCS Division V championship, while the boys' team was the CCS Division V runner-up. Over 200 athletes from 24 teams across California compete in the Division V state race.

In addition to the impressive team finishes, many of the runners earned personal records for their race times. Five out of seven girls earned personal records during the championship race, and every girl demonstrated improvement over the 2016 season. The boys’ team also made great strides, moving up 178 points to rise from 18th place to 9th place this year.

“Every program athlete — including our amazing varsity and varsity-alternate athletes — should be very proud,” said Associate Head of School Terry Lee. “We are very proud of all of you! The future of our cross-country program looks bright.”
