Adult Lit Club — Change of Venue!
On October 16 at 8:00 pm, the Adult Lit Club will meet to discuss The Eight, by Katherine Neville. We'll meet this month in the reception lobby of the J Building. Come discuss this novel before the author comes to Nueva on November 10 as speaker at the first-ever Nueva Book Fair Literary Lunch!

Saturday, October 11, 11:00 am: Children's author Bob Barner (a popular Book Fair speaker at Nueva) will read aloud from his newest book Penguins, Penguins Everywhere. Fun for the little penguins — oh, and kids, too. Books, Inc. in the Marina, San Francisco.

Tuesday, October 14, 6:00–8:00 pm: David Macaulay visits the San Francisco Public Library, Main Branch.

Tuesday, October 14, 7:00 pm: Celebrated graphic novelist Art Speigelman will discuss his newest book Breakdowns: Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&*!, a book about the comic format and how comics have formed him. Books Inc. in Opera Plaza.

Saturday, October 18, 10:30 am: Halloween Story Time and Crafts at the Belmont Library, Children’s Room.

Sunday October 19, 11:30 am: Story Time with Mem Fox at Kepler’s.

Monday, October 20, 6:30 pm: Authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson will read from their new book Science Fair at Books Inc. in Alameda.

Tuesday, October 21, 6:30–7:30 pm: “Paws for Tales.” Come read to therapy dogs. Although most of the scheduled times are taken, children may drop in and wait to read to a dog. Please note that the Humane Society requires parents to sign a release form each time a child reads to a dog. Belmont Library, Children's Room

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 6:30 pm: Author David Shannon talks about his delightful new title Too Many Toys! at Books Inc. in Alameda.

Saturday, October 25, 11:00 am: Author Oliver Chin will read from Monster Isle at Books Inc. in Mountain View.

Saturday, Oct. 25, 3:00–5:00 pm: “How to Draw with Your Kid/How to Draw with Your Grownup: A Saturday cartooning workshop for parents and children.” Everybody knows that it's great to read together; it’s great to draw together, too. Presented at the Cartoon Art Museum, San Francisco, for students 7 and up, with their grownup. $10 per person. Monday, November 3, 6:30 pm: Meet Elisa Kleven (a popular Nueva Book Fair speaker) as she talks about how she became a writer and illustrator of children's books. Belmont Library, Children's Room.

Wednesday November 5, 7:00 pm: National Book Award winner MT Anderson presents the thrilling conclusion to his literary masterpiece, The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing: Volume II Kingdom on the Waves at Books Inc. Opera Plaza, San Francisco.

Children's Poet Laureate Announced

The Poetry Foundation has selected the second Children’s Poet Laureate: Mary Ann Hoberman. As Children's Poet Laureate, Ms. Hoberman receives a cash award and a lovely medallion featuring the cartoon Pegasus characterized by James Thurber encircled with the words "Children's Poet Laureate" on one side and a line of an Emily Dickinson poem on the other side, "Permit a child to join." The Children's Poet Laureate will serve as a consultant to the Foundation for a two-year period and will give at least two public readings during her tenure.
