A Greener Nueva

Nueva has been making an effort to make our school greener. In the last few years, Nueva has added green roofs to two of our buildings. We have put energy efficient light bulbs in most of the new buildings, and when we don’t need the lights, we turn them off. Nueva has been recycling paper, using low water sinks and toilets, and doing whatever we can to save the environment.

The green roof is a good habitat for bugs, butterflies, and small birds. It also keeps of the buildings cool. The plants have full access to rain water, and there are built-in sprinklers on the top of the buildings. The first year that we had the new buildings, we released Monarch Butterflies so that they could find a home on our roofs.

We have also added solar panels to one of the buildings that has a lot of computer use. The solar panels provide some of the power for our computers and lights for the J building. We have put in a system in a lot of the lighting circuits that turns the lights on when there is movement, and turn them off when nobody is in the room. That is another of the ways that we as a school community save energy.
