Tuvya's fascination with geography began when he was four, and was given a globe by his grandmother. Then, when Tuvya was in first grade, teacher David Louis, parent of one of Tuvya's classmates, mentioned to Stephen Lessard, who ran the school Geo Bees, that Tuvya loved geography. Stephen invited Tuvya up to watch the Middle Schoolers compete, and he was hooked. His mom said, "Stephen has been a great mentor to Tuvya in terms of making geography accessible in a way that no one else could -- making opportunities for him and not worrying about Tuvya being too young."

Tuvya Wins State Geo Bee! Print E-mail

NatGeoBeeTuvya has just become the first 4th grader to win the State Bee in 20 years, competing against students through 8th grade. He now moves on to the national competition.

Tuvya's classmate, Noah, interviewed Tuvya and wrote this article in our student newspaper, The Nueva Times. You can also read about it in the Sacramento Bee and in this article in the Chronicle.

 
Nuevans at Carnegie Hall! Print E-mail

CarnegieHalThis spring, two Nueva students, Ila and Emma, both eighth graders, are appearing at Carnegie Hall in New York, one because of her dedication to music, the other because of her passion for writing and art. Their interests may be very different, but they share a commitment to their respective arts and a devotion to pursuing it at the highest levels.

It's easy to find people who want to change some aspect of government programs, revenue strategies, regulations, or spending. But one of the problems with getting any fiscal or political reform enacted is that everyone wants the pain of reform or change to rest on...well, somebody else. Seniors don't want Medicare or Social Security cut. Defense contractors don't want the defense budget cut. People earning income don't want more income taxes. Health insurance companies don't want health insurance regulation. And, as up to 18,000 students in New Jersey demonstrated this past week by walking out of class and staging public rallies to protest budget cuts, young people don't want education funding reduced.
