Community Events

Neuva's surrounding communities are invited to attend many school events and to participate in school programs. For example, students, educators, parents, and other people outside Nueva participate in the Innovative Learning Conference, Nueva Summer camp, Enrichment classes for students, Math Circles, the annual STEM Fair, and more. The Common Ground Speaker Series presents some of the nation's most compelling thought leaders in parenting, education and health at local schools and other public venues.

Common Ground Speaker Series: Throughout each school year, Common Ground presents authors and thinkers in parenting, education and health at several peninsula venues. Recent speakers included Sir Ken Robinson, author of The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything and Out of Our Minds: Learning to Be Creative, and Barbara Coloroso, who wrote Just Because It's Not Wrong Doesn't Make It Right and The Bully, the Bullied and the Bystander.

Enrichment Classes: Students outside Nueva are invited to take special enrichment classes that take place on weekends. Recent offerings included classes in Science, Mandarin, Creative Robotics, and Rock Ensemble. Students could learn about the human body's anatomy and physiology in the Science Saturday series, dive deeper into language with two different levels of Mandarin, build Lego robots in the Wizbots Creative Robotics Lab, or play instruments in the Rock Ensemble.

Innovative Learning Conference (ILC): The Nueva-launched ILC provides meaningful resources and inspiring direction for parents, teachers, and administrators, as well as continuing education credits for teachers and administrators. The conference addresses a broad range of topics and innovative learning strategies developed for gifted and talented programs that are broadly applicable for all learners and educators.

Math Circles: Guided by mathematicians and educators, the Math Circles provide students (PreK-8) with opportunities to play with interesting mathematical activities, puzzles, and problems. Parents are invited to participate with their children in each Math Circle. These events generally take place in the evenings.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fair: Taking place each spring, the STEM Fair is a well-attended event by families from surrounding communities. The virtual Exploratorium-for-a-day is one of Nueva's most memorable events of the year. Students, faculty, parents, and staff prepare a dazzling variety of hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. Past exhibits included an egg launch, organ dissection, spaghetti towers, and a human foosball.

Social-Emotional Learning Institute: Through summer workshops, the SEL Institute provides teachers and other education professionals with the inspiration, rationale, and ideas to bring SEL into their communities. Each session blends theory with practice and empowers attendees to educate with student well -being and cooperation as core principles.
