Dice and Randomness

Every now and then we post interesting stories about Nueva and its alums, stories that show some essential quality of Nueva students and education. If you have one, please email it to Matt.

Prior to a freshman World Religions oral exam with twelve potential questions, the teacher informed the class that the students would only need to answer five of the twelve questions, and that he, the teacher, would select the five questions randomly on the day of the test using a pair of dice. 

Most of the students, simmering in a late spring stupor, were prepared to blithely follow these instructions. But one Nueva graduate's hand popped up.

"Excuse me Mr. Brown, this method will not result in random questions. We won't need to study question 1 at all, because it will not occur in a pair of dice, and we would concentrate our studies on question 7, as its probability of occurring is the highest.

"I have a 12-sided die at home and can bring it in if that would be of help to you."

Always thinking, speaking up and engaging in class, thinking mathematically, more interested in learning than in finding the easy way, and, of course, using those SEL skills to be helpful rather than confrontational -- several of the hallmarks of Nueva students.

The Nueva School relies on the support of current and past parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends to advance the mission of the school. The Nueva community gives generously of its time, talent, and treasures. Nueva's mission—to inspire passion for lifelong learning, foster social and emotional acuity, and develop the child’s imaginative mind— is the basis for all of our fundraising efforts. Since tuition does not cover the total cost of a Nueva education, the school seeks voluntary charitable gifts to fulfill the mission and provide the high quality progressive programs that are a hallmark of the school.

Annual fundraising efforts represent approximately 16% of the operating budget and supply Nueva with the ingredients that propel it from “good to great.” Funds raised through the Nueva Fund campaign in the fall and the Benefit Auction event in the spring support essential aspects of a Nueva education including faculty salaries, professional development, financial aid, educational programs, and campus upkeep.

The philanthropy of our community enables Nueva to:  develop innovative world class initiatives including social emotional learning and design thinking; offer language programs in Mandarin, Spanish, and Japanese that include study trips and unique cultural experiences; build and maintain state-of-the-art facilities; attract and retain the best faculty members; invest in professional development for faculty; purchase the information technology, library materials, and scientific equipment necessary to deliver advanced curriculum to students; fund signature programs in art, drama, and music; and, underwrite co-curricular programs such as athletics and field trips.  Without charitable giving, Nueva couldn’t deliver the education you expect for your children.
