Advancing Parental Exploration For Parents of Young Gifted Children
|
What is APE?
Advancing Parental Exploration (APE) is an adaptive, evidence-based adult education program for parents of young, gifted children, ages 3-6. It is designed to support these parents as they begin their child's educational and developmental journey. It addresses the unique and typical parenting challenges they face in an integrative manner. Parents' needs and concerns are examined in a way that allows them to construct conceptions, skills, and strategies that match their child's developmental needs, as well as individual and familial values.
All of this in a social, interactive format!
|
How do we do it?
A.P.E. offers a Social Practicum series that provides an opportunity for parents to learn the theories about, research on, and practical applications of a given topic related to parenting gifted children. Each session provides a balance of presentation, discussion, and experiential learning, while concluding with a guided discussion of related topics and emergent questions. Social interaction remains a fundamental element of the learning process.
These sessions are open to both Nueva families and families outside of the Nueva community. Registration is required (see registration section).

| Social-Practicum Dates and Topics
1/5/12: Integrating SEL: Cooperation in Early Childhood 2/15/12: Motivation and Competence 3/15/12: Peers, Playdates, and Pressures
All sessions run from 6:30 to 9:00 PM, in the Nueva Library Preregistration required. Space is limited.

Nueva offers a constructivist program, project-based learning, and special-area teachers in visual art, reading, math, science, music, physical education, technology, and social-emotional learning. Nueva teachers work in teams to develop thematic curricula for their classes. Our school community inspires passion for lifelong learning, fosters social and emotional acuity, and develops the imaginative mind. Fundamentally, Nueva uses a dynamic educational model to enable gifted children to learn how to make choices that will benefit the world.

A fun math-filled evening |
Guided by mathematicians and educators, the Nueva Math Circle provides students with opportunities to play with interesting mathematical activities, puzzles, and problems. This year's Math Circle has been expanded to include students in preK to 8th grade, with new sessions specially geared for middle schoolers. Parents are invited to participate with their children in the Math Circle, and are asked to supervise their own children. In addition to Nueva families, the Math Circle is open to the public.
Our Lower School session will be led by two fantastic speakers:
Katherine Cook and Dan Finkel of The Robinson Center for Young Scholars at the University of Washington
Our Middle School session is entitled "Finding The Thing That Does Not Change: Invariants in Math Problems" and will be led by
Dimitri Zvonkine of Stanford University
New Registration Fee: $10 per student (parents free) to help offset the cost of speaker honoraria and related expenses. Register here!
Pizza will be available for $7 per person.
