What might surprise you is that his parents and teachers encouraged him to use school time to indulge this passion. The result? An indie rock concert at the Great American Music Hall benefiting The Trevor Project and It Gets Better.

The Rainbow Connection Print E-mail

Thumbnail imageThe student-led club, The Rainbow Connection, conducted a recent Middle School meeting, shared skits on the use of anti-gay language in schools, and also played the song, "The Rainbow Connection," from the Muppets. A few students also spoke about what it means to be an ally to help prevent bullying -- all bullying -- in schools. The students rehearsed and prepared for the meeting with the help of Steven Chanan and Taryn Clark, the faculty advisors to the club. The meeting focused on fostering a healthy community with the use of positive, supportive language, and how all students and teachers in a community can work together to create a healthy school culture, where all students feel included. The focus was on civil and human rights. Amelia, one of the group's leaders, reports:

February 1 through March 5, 2010

African American History Month is an annual nation-wide observance in February, celebrating the past and present achievements of African Americans/African descendants in American history. African American History was established as a week-long observance in February of 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson to honor the history and contributions of African American/African descendants to American life. The month of February was chosen because it marks the birthdays of Fredrick Douglass, a civil rights leader, and President Abraham Lincoln: two men who greatly influenced African (Black) Americans. In 1976, the week-long observance was expanded into African American History Month.
