The IQ Test Print E-mail

The Nueva School has remained true to its mission: to cultivate and serve the intellectually and creatively gifted child. In considering students for admission, we look for evidence of intellectual curiosity, independent thought and depth of ideas, creativity in approach to problem solving, and divergent thinking. Part of the admissions process includes submitting the results of an IQ evaluation. The Nueva School currently accepts the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Third Edition (WPPSI-III) and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV).

The Wechsler IQ Test yields a measure of general intelligence and knowledge by examining various abilities. We encourage parents to downplay the notion of "test" and stress that it is a time to have an adult's undivided attention to assist with jobs or tasks, complete puzzles, and share what they know. The Admissions Committee recognizes that the IQ test samples a variety of intelligence functions, including items such as mathematical ability, reasoning skills, and perceptual-motor abilities, but does not necessarily measure other areas of talent or giftedness. However, we have found that students who fall within a specific range are most successful in our program. The IQ Test is only one part of a much larger evaluation process.

The WPPSI-III (for children under 6 years of age) takes approximately one hour to complete. The WISC-IV (for children 6 and older) takes approximately two hours and includes a 15-minute break (if needed).

Both WPPSI and WISC evaluations are offered on campus as part of the application process. Parents are encouraged to reserve a space early as spaces fill up quickly. Test results will be mailed to parents/guardians two weeks after testing. (Please inform the Admissions Office if you do not want to receive a copy of your child's test results.) In the context of the Admissions process, results are valid for two years, or two admissions cycles. After that the applicant will need to retest. Children who have taken the Wechsler Intelligence Test within the past year cannot re-take the test.

When all appointments have been booked, applicants must schedule outside testing with a licensed psychologist. Please be sure the psychologist you choose administers the WPPSI III or WISC IV. Older versions or other IQ Tests will not be accepted. Please also make sure the psychologist is able to return the results and report to the Admissions Office no later than 5 pm February 10, 2012, and that they have a copy of Nueva's Guidelines for Outside Testing. The Admissions Office Fax number is 650-348-3642.
