Age Requirements
By September 1, 2012, applicants for grade 2 should be seven years old, applicants for grade 3 should be eight, and applicants for grade 4 should be nine.
It is possible that your child has already been in one of these grades in another school but does not make the Nueva cutoff for the next grade. If a child seems more appropriately matched for a lower or higher grade, the Admissions Office will make a recommendation to the family after the school visit and activity session. We are committed to appropriate placement and would be more than happy to discuss placement during the parent/guardian interview.
Additional Requirements Post-Testing for Grades 2–4
Activity Session Candidates attend a two-hour admissions activity session with other candidates. This time provides an opportunity for the Admissions Committee members to spend time with your child and get to know him/her in a classroom setting. During the visit, children complete writing, reading, and math activities and participate in creative interactive projects.
School Visit Applicants spend one school day at Nueva during the admissions season, shadowing a Nueva student in the grade in which they are currently enrolled. They have an opportunity to participate in all class projects, lessons, and activities. We recommend that visitors wear comfortable layers of clothing and shoes appropriate for outdoor play, and that they bring a nut-free snack for the morning, a backpack, pencil, and a book they enjoy reading. A complimentary hot lunch will be provided, unless a packed lunch from home is preferred. The School Visit is a chance for candidates to get to know students and teachers, and learn more about Nueva's program and community. We hope this information will be helpful to families.
