The vitality of the Nueva environment shines through the Upper School arts program. Students select from a wide variety of art forms, developing their skills to create beauty and elegance in form and content. The rich program emphasizes creative intelligence, design, craftsmanship, presentation, and performance.

It is framed by the work of the STEM to STEAM movement encouraging the incorporation of art and design into traditional science and technology curricula to better develop skills of critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation so essential for success in the 21st century.

Courses are taught by practicing “artists in residence,” who maintain their own studios and arts commitments beyond Nueva. The Upper School arts requirement is fulfilled through the electives program (see electives page for course descriptions).

Visual Arts

The integration of tools, techniques, and technologies helps develop both fluency and unique ways to think about the world.

Studio Art

By working with various materials, students learn diverse approaches to studio arts and develop an appreciation of historical masterpieces. Courses emphasize students' technical understanding, practice, and innovation in their pieces.

Students learn musical expression through improvisation, composition, computer music, history, analysis, orchestration, experimental music, and jazz. Students participate in chorus, and chamber music ensemble experience is available. Students perform their own works and that created by peers; advanced students complete and perform a composition critiqued by experts.

Performing Arts

The performing arts bring together experiences that build students' self-assurance and life skills. In addition to igniting a passion for the stage, students learn kinesthetic and dramatic skills, improved self-confidence and public speaking techniques, the ability to accept and apply feedback, time management, commitment, and collaboration with an ensemble.
