The Social-Emotional Learning program is a cornerstone of Nueva’s educational philosophy (see program overview).

Middle school is an especially important time for students to participate in SEL. They should feel they are in a community where their voices are valued and they are empowered to lead. To meet the need for increased independence, class activities are designed to provide a balance of structure and self-exploration so students can practice active listening, empathy, and decision-making with peers in an environment where they are encouraged to take risks and reflect on the learning process.

SEL MS Tinker

During a team-building activity, students learn how to manage emotions and build upon ideas while working to build a tower as a group.

SEL MS Meditation

Students participate in guided visualization, a mindfulness-based practice that helps to improve attention, self-awareness, and self-control.
