musicAs students transition into Middle School, the music program's emphasis moves more directly into understanding and enjoying various musical styles, including frequent exposure to music from world cultures. Fifth and sixth grade music courses include weekly work on music fundamentals like rhythm, harmony, and composition, all presented in a hands-on, experiential environment. Classes meet biweekly for forty-five minutes each. As improvisation is a musical skill that crosses all styles, fifth and sixth grade students are introduced to improvisation through blues, jazz, and popular music study. In addition to music-theory studies, students learn digital sound recording with the professional-level recording software Pro Tools. Additionally, students are exposed to online theory and composition work, and create individual and group musical projects based on the curricular focus. As a culminating project, sixth graders perform, record, and produce an original music CD.

Seventh and eighth graders participate in the robust and varied music elective program, which include the weekly classes: Steel Drums, African and Brazilian Drumming, Funk/Rock/Jazz Ensembles, Composition, Electronic Music, A Capella Ensemble, and Advanced Music Theory.
