Associate Teaching

Thumbnail imageNueva's programs, teachers, and students provide a living laboratory for beginning teachers to explore and develop their teaching gifts. In a supportive environment of lifelong learning, teaching associates can draw on the rich mentoring they receive from the classroom and specialist teachers with whom they work to stretch their teaching in new directions.

Committed to supporting and preparing the teachers of tomorrow since 1967, Nueva provides associates experience in all facets of teaching and faculty life. They witness and participate in exemplary teaching practices, including Nueva's unique programs such as Lit Club, social and emotional learning, and design thinking.

Faculty members work in grade-level and division teams to design programs and curricula, and associates actively participate in this process, bringing fresh ideas, perspectives, and energy to their teaching teams. Associates benefit from this professional collaboration, and in turn, the program, the students, and the broader Nueva community are enriched by contributions of this future generation of teachers.

Diverse and Inclusive

As rich and diverse as our student population, our team of associates represents educators from all backgrounds and stages in their careers. For example, we have mid-career job changers, such as those leaving the corporate world from finance or law, who are searching for a more meaningful application of their talents and bring a diversity of experience, skills, and perspectives to classrooms.

Those entering education from such fields as psychology and behavior therapy bring crucial critical-thinking skills, analytical minds, and social and emotional functioning, which are invaluable to working with Nueva's gifted students. Associates who come to Nueva from afterschool and enrichment programs, sports coaching, or classrooms in other school settings bring backgrounds in curriculum design and classroom management, as well as a desire for experience in a self-contained classroom.

Enriching

Brimming with experience and inspired by innovative ideas and techniques, Nueva associate teachers are eagerly hired by both public and independent schools throughout the Bay Area and nationwide. While most associates go on to teach in their own classrooms, some continue studies in pursuit of advanced degrees, while a few choose to embark on other careers inspired by their work with our students.

Among independent-school communities that have been enriched by our associate teaching alumni are Maryland's The Park School, New York's Bank Street School for Children, and California's Katherine Delmar Burke School. Associates have also gone on to share their teaching gifts with many public and international schools.

"Working at Nueva is a rare opportunity to be part of a diverse community of teachers, students, parents, and administrators who value critical thinking, hands-on learning, collaboration, and social-emotional education and growth. This progressive, innovative model provides a rich experience in a supportive, caring environment for lifelong learners, children and adults alike." —Margie Gurvich, 4th grade associate.

"Nueva's Learn by Doing motto not only applies to the students, but also to the Associate Teaching Program. There has never been a moment when I felt like I was up a creek without a paddle. From the beginning of the school year, associate teachers are coached by both their mentor-teacher as well as other esteemed educators within the school to learn classroom management, curriculum development, and the nuances that come with teaching every day. Of its candidates, the Associate Teaching Program expects dedication, enthusiasm, and willingness to be challenged; its reward is a vast breadth of knowledge and experience that I will retain and utilize in my teaching career." —Graham Toben, kindergarten associate.
